2019 Four-Way Speech Contest Winners
Murrieta Rotary Announces Four-Way Speech Contest Winners
Murrieta Rotary’s Four-Way Test Speech Contest held at the Murrieta Valley Unified School District Headquarters, saw a repeat win by last year’s winner Olivia Chmiel. Olivia was a freshman at Great Oak High School when she won last year’s contest; this year she’s a sophmore and again a strong contender. Olivia competed in the Rotary District 5330 Four-Way Test contest on Saturday, April 27 and placed second.
Second place winner was Katherine Beyer, a sophmore at Vista Murrieta High School while third place went to Jenna West, a junior at Murrieta Valley High School. Amanda Beyer, Katherine’s twin sister, and also a sophmore at Vista was the Novice award winner. Nine high schoolers competed for the prizes.

Marsha Hall Brown chaired the speech contest, as she has for the past six years (during which time Murrieta winners have placed first or second in the District finals). For this year’s contest, the judges were Rotary Club members Paul Evenson and Kelly Orchard plus Ginger Greaves from the Santa Rosa Plateau Educational Foundation; serving as timers were Rotarians Jacqui Dobens and Karen Brooks. Bob Brown served as master of ceremonies while Club President Jann Gentry spoke on Rotary and what the organization does.
Four-Way Test Speech contestants addressed topics of current interest and importance, and were asked to use concepts from the Four-Way Test as methods of discussion or analysis in the body of the speech. Chmiel spoke on mental health awareness.
“We are pleased to have had such a fine group of young people addressing topics and incorporating the Four Way Test in their comments,” said Marsha Hall Brown, contest chair. “Nine students spoke on important topics that were close to their hearts.”
