Six Local High Schoolers Win in 2022 Murrieta Rotary Music Contest

Six local-area high school students took top prizes in Murrieta Rotary Club’s annual music contest held on Thursday, March 3, at the Salvation Army Murrieta Community Center. First place winners in the contest will move to Rotary District competitions this spring.

In the vocal competition, Kayah Redhouse, a freshman at Great Oak High School took first place, singing “Someone Like You” from the musical “Jekyll and Hyde.” Veronica Mari, a freshman at Linfield Christian School, took second place performing “Journey to the Past” from the animated musical “Anastasia.” In third place was Marlee Walker, a senior at Vista Murrieta High School, singing “She Used to be Mine” from the musical “Waitress.”

In the Instrumental competition, Christine Park, a sophomore at Vista Murrieta High School, won first place for her violin performance of “Polinaise de concert in D major Op. 4” by Henri Wieniawski. Murrieta Valley High School Senior Austin Brown, was second performing a medley of Flamenco guitar music including “Malgueña, Tamacun and Solearus.” Winning third place was Katya Cross, a Murrieta Valley High School sophomore, performing “La Folia” by Arcangelo Corelli, arrangement by S. Suzuki on her violin.

“We had an amazing group of eight students competing, and the results were very close,” said Rob Haskins, chair of the music contest. “We are very thankful for the work the judges put into this. We are confident that our students advancing to the District contests will do very well.”

The music competition, along with other educational and community activities, is made possible by funds from sponsors of the Murrieta Rotary’s annual Murrieta Field of Honor which is scheduled for November 5-12, 2022.
